Afghanistan Legislative Council member, Malalai Joya, has won the prestigious Anna Politkovskaya award for women who defend human rights.

On the 7th of October 2006, Russian investigative journalist, Anna Politkovskaya, was killed in Moscow. The award sponsored by 'RAW in WAR', in Anna's name is given every year to a woman human rights defender from a conflict zone in the world who, like Anna, stands up for the victims, often at great personal risk.

The 2008 award was presented in London, England on October 6th beofore an audience if international journalists, where Malalai Joya was introduced as, "A courageous woman, and human rights defender from the war in Afghanistan".

An outspoken critic of some fellow members of the Afghanistan parliament, who has been banned twice from the legislature for calling fellow MPs 'warlords' , Malalai Joya lives in fear of her life, for defending human rights in Afghanistan - especially the rights of women.

In her acceptance speech she said, "I will not stop telling the truth in the face of intimidation".
